Situated about 6km from Dharamsala, Gyuto Monastery is a popular pilgrim site and the abode of Karmapa (the head of the Karma Kagyu, a major school of Tibetan Buddhism). Often called as TCV School, the monastery houses the majestic image of Sakyamuni Buddha enshrined in a small chamber.
The gompa was built to commemorate the Tibetan soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of Tibet. The structures of the stupa in the monastery have a stark resemblance to the structures that were built by King Asoka during the 3rd century BC. Buses to Gyuto Monastery from Dharamsala are available from the main bus stop. Besides, taxis can be hired too.
